Russia hit a Kyiv–Warsaw train minutes after foreign political figures used the route

A Russian drone struck an evacuated passenger train near Yahodyn, close to Poland, shortly after a group including Boris Johnson, Carl Bildt and former CIA director David Petraeus had travelled through the area. Nobody aboard the targeted train was killed because passengers had already been evacuated.

It came during an exceptionally large assault involving 863 Russian drones. Other strikes hit railway infrastructure, while a child and an adult were killed in Zvyahel and nine people were injured in Odesa. Whether Russia specifically intended to target the foreign visitors is not established; the broader targeting of Ukraine’s railway network is clear.

Rail remains the physical artery connecting Kyiv to Europe, so attacks near the Polish frontier simultaneously disrupt Ukrainian logistics and make visiting Ukraine feel riskier for foreign political elites.
