Congressional investigators seek records on the oligarch-funded Trump Jr. wedding

Rep. Robert Garcia, the senior Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has opened an investigation into Donald Trump Jr.’s relationship with Umar Kremlev, the Putin-linked Russian oligarch who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward Trump Jr.’s wedding weekend.

Garcia requested communications between the men and records of purchases by foreign nationals. The request follows ProPublica’s finding that an International Boxing Association affiliate in Dubai paid for a private-island rental, fireworks and other expenses. Kremlev runs the IBA, which has received financing from Russia’s state-owned Gazprom, and attended the small event with a group of Russian guests.

The response adds useful confirmation. Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump said Kremlev “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations,” calling it a gift from a friend without political motive. President Trump said Kremlev did not pay for the wedding ceremony itself and described the later event as an afterparty. ProPublica notes that the Saturday celebration occurred on the same island as the Friday ceremony, while Sunday’s reception—with the couple’s first dance and wedding cake—was on a neighbouring island rented by Kremlev.

A minority-party investigation cannot compel the same cooperation as a committee subpoena backed by the majority. It does, however, convert the reporting into a specific documentary question: what relationship and financial disclosures exist behind an unusually large foreign gift to the president’s politically influential son?
