ChatGPT’s ad platform has a competitive gate

The Information reports restrictions on Adobe and other companies advertising competing AI products in ChatGPT.

The broader rule is visible in OpenAI’s own policy. Alongside content and safety requirements, it reserves discretion to reject advertisers on business or competitive grounds. The September changelog specifically calls out that addition.

Adobe had announced in February that it was participating in the ChatGPT advertising pilot. That earlier partnership makes the distinction useful: being a platform partner does not guarantee access for every product an advertiser wants to promote.

There are two separate decisions here. One is whether an ad is acceptable in a sensitive conversation. The other is whether the advertiser competes with the platform. The policy accommodates both, even though they serve different purposes.

For businesses, that means distribution through conversational AI is subject to commercial gatekeeping as well as auction prices and creative quality. A company can build a useful product and still find its route to prospective customers controlled by a rival.
