OpenAI’s reported Glass Imaging purchase adds camera engineering to its hardware push
The Wall Street Journal reports that OpenAI acquired Glass Imaging for more than $300mn; The Information also carried the deal in a Briefing. Neither company had publicly confirmed the purchase when the reports appeared. Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop and had raised about $30mn.
The technical asset is more specific than generic “AI photography.” GlassAI replaces several stages of a conventional image-signal pipeline—such as colour reconstruction, noise reduction, sharpening and frame fusion—with a neural processor trained for a particular lens-and-sensor combination. The company says this recovers detail captured by the sensor rather than inventing it after the fact. Its zoom technology is already used in Honor’s 600-series phones.
OpenAI has not said what it will do with the technology. The obvious context is its consumer-hardware effort with Jony Ive, whose io business it bought for $6.5bn in 2025, but connecting GlassAI to any specific future product is still inference. Per-module training also means the software must be retuned for each optical system.
The purchase suggests OpenAI is acquiring the physical-input stack needed for an AI-native device; controlling how a camera turns photons into usable model input could matter as much as putting a chatbot behind a lens.
