AI is helping workers attempt tasks outside their occupations

Work-related ChatGPT use often crosses occupational boundaries. In OpenAI’s July study, 16.8% of all work-related messages concerned tasks outside the user’s occupation. Among messages tied to a specific occupation, excluding broadly shared activities, the share was 43.5%.

Outside-occupation tasks among occupation-specific messages: customer experience 77%, design 75%, human resources 69%, legal 56%, marketing 53%.OpenAI, Work at the Frontier. Selected occupations; excludes generic tasks. Message shares are not shares of working time.

The analysis covers more than 800,000 work-related messages on individual ChatGPT accounts, linked to occupation information supplied through ChatGPT Business. It examines eight occupation groups against O*NET task descriptions.

The two headline percentages use different denominators. Neither measures the share of a working day—or an entire job—being replaced. The study also cannot tell whether outputs were used, were correct, or received specialist review.

The finding is that people are attempting work traditionally associated with other roles. Whether that reduces handoffs, creates new work, or changes the specialist’s role remains an open organizational question.
